Westport continues winning
Westport Cos maintained their 100% start to the season with an impressive 6-1 win over Paroa at Coronation Park on Sunday. Paroa did start the game with ten men after a few squad members failed to make the trip north. They held their own in the first half, though they did find themselves 2-0 down before being awarded a penalty, but unfortunately Ben Anderson couldn’t find the net with his shot. Anton Merkushev did pull one back for Paroa with a shot from outside the box, but it was all Westport after that. A third before half-time, then another three in the second half brought their tally to six. Dan Maloney was the star of the game, with three goals. Kane Marshall, Josh Roche and Karta Ginley all score one each.
At Arthur Fong, things were much more competitive between Grey United and Marist. Marist started the brighter of the two with Daymo Nuhaj hitting the post early on. After a free kick wasn’t cleared by the Grey United defence Nuhaj was quickest to react on the edge of the box to volley into the corner of the net. For the remainder of the game, Grey United kept their pressure up mainly through the efforts of their young strikers, Daniel Horridge and Jonathan Watts. Ethan Kelleher in the Marist goal had a great game, making several important saves in the second half. The single first-half goal was enough, in the end, to win the game 1-0 for Marist.
Westport Cos, after their two home games, find themselves on six points after two games and top of the table. Marist and Paroa, both on four points, will face off this Sunday at Arthur Fong and a win will be vital for either side if they hope to win the first-round trophy. Westport Cos make the long trip down to Hokitika to face Westland United on Sunday, while Grey United have the bye.
